A repair often involves one or two layers. A replacement redoes them all.
- 01Shingles. The visible layer, which takes the rain, snow and wind.
- 02Underlayment. A second barrier under the shingles, in case water gets through.
- 03Ice barrier membrane. At the roof edge, where ice dams push water back up.
- 04Roof deck. The wood panels that carry all the other layers.
- 05Flashing. The metal pieces where the roof meets a wall or a chimney.

What to watch, season by season
After the thaw, look from the ground for missing shingles, and check the ceiling for signs of leaks.
The season for major work: replacement, flat roofs, complete reroofing.
Get ready for winter: have repairs done before the freeze and have the flat roof drains cleared.
Have the snow removed when it builds up. Watch for thick icicles at the roof edge and stains on the ceiling.
Everywhere in Laval
The same bylaw for the whole city
From Chomedey to Saint-François, the roofing rules come from the same Code de l'urbanisme. For a residence, the City sums up the permit rule in one line: replacing the covering with the same material does not require one, replacing it with a new material does.
Another rule targets flat roofs, those with a slope of no more than 2:12, or 16.7%. The Code requires them to have a green roof, a white covering or a material with a solar reflectance index of at least 78. It does not say what applies to an existing roof redone identically: that is a question to ask the City before the work. The article does not cover sloped roofs.
Some addresses have one more step. In heritage areas, including the old villages of Sainte-Rose and Sainte-Dorothée, changing the roof covering of a principal building may require an additional approval. Our guides explain what to check before signing with a roofer.
Frequently asked questions
Is the quote really free?
Yes. Sending a request does not commit you to anything. You decide only after you get the price.
Who will call me back?
We will. We call you back to set up an appointment, then we come and see the roof before giving a price.
How much does the work cost?
The price depends on the type of roof, its size, its condition and access. We give you a written price after seeing the roof.
I have a leak right now. What should I do?
Write "emergency" in the description of your request, with where the water is coming in. Protect your belongings in the meantime and do not go up on the roof. If a ceiling is sagging or water is reaching electrical wires, leave the room and call 911.
Can I request roof snow removal?
Yes, in winter. Choose "Roof snow removal" in the form and give your type of roof. Do not go up on a snow-covered roof yourself.
I don't know what type of roof I have.
Choose "I don't know" in the form and simply describe your building. We take care of the rest.
